On Friday 19th February 2010 The Queen presented the 2009 Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education to the Vice Chancellors and Principals of the 21 winning institutions at a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace.
The Vice Chancellors and Principals received the medals from The Queen, with The Duke of Edinburgh presenting the awards certificates to academics representing the award-winning work.
Following the ceremony, the Chancellors, Vice Chancellors and Principals, together with students and staff, gathered in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace for an informal drinks reception. There they met The Queen, Prince Philip and the Princess Royal, Chancellor of the University of London, and discussed their award-winning entries.
The celebratory banquet
On the previous evening, the 21 prize winners were honoured at a banquet held at Guildhall in the City of London. The event was attended by the Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors, Principals and representatives of the winning institutions. Also attending were other guests of the Trust, including those from government, the education sector, commerce and other leading figures from the UK and elsewhere. Support for the event was received from the City of London and a number of national organisations, including Marks & Spencer plc and Waitrose Limited.
Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors and Principals were led into Guildhall by a detachment of the Scots Guards, accompanied by fanfares from four state trumpeters from The Band of The Blues and Royals. Guests were served dinner by hospitality students from further education colleges and from Thames Valley University, which won a 2009 Queen’s Anniversary Prize for its hospitality courses.
During dinner, guests enjoyed musical interludes by Exhibition Brass from the Royal College of Music and a performance by the Trinity Jazz Ensemble. Keynote speeches were given by Professor Richard Levin, President of Yale University, and Sir Graeme Davies, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London.
Transcripts of the speeches are available here.
